( Ayurvedic Protocols For Monsoon)

Will the Recently Arrived  Virus  be carried away in the rain? Or will the outbreaks increase when it rains? It is natural to have many doubts, fears in one's mind while predicting such a World of difference.  But Ayurved  is  there with all of us in all these problems and calamities.  What is needed is,  to turn to Ayurved with full faith.

Ayurved  is not just a science to deal with diseases, medicines, deteriorating healths but Ayurved is A Scientific Healthy Lifestyle. Ayurved describes, the tasks ideally and scientifically with a proper sequence, to be performed throughout the day.. called "Dinacharya". And  The special dietary & habits changes in the Dinacharya according to each season are called "Rutucharya".

The period where "Aadan kaal" (period before the rainy season) ends and "Visarg Kaal" (period after summer) starts is the period of end of “Grishma Rutu”(Summer) and the beginning of “Varsha Rutu” (Monsoon). The beginning of the ”Visarg” period is the beginning of “Dakshinayan” which indicates the start of the journey of The Sun towards South.

"विसृजति जनयति आप्यं अन्शं प्राणिनां च बलं इति विसर्गः |"

Water (Jal) is the element that gives life to all living things. This is the time where “Visarg kaal” Rejuvenates all the living beings with its Aqueous nature.

"आदान दुर्बले देहे पक्ता भवति दुर्बलः|
स वर्षासु अनिलादिनां दुषणैः बाध्यते पुनः||"

The sprinkling of rain showers on the mind and body, which are weakened by the heat of summer, and loss of strength during the “Aadan Kaal”, creates a pleasant atmosphere. However, due to the dehydration by heat, during the “Aadan Kaal”, the “Agni” in the body (digestive powder of the entire body) is weakened and the human body is weakened. The “Dosh” which are already aggravated previously again cause down-gradation in “Agni” and this “Mandagni”(Hampered Digestion) causes again further aggravation in “Dosh” in body. Thus the Vicious Cycle begins. It also causes loss of appetite, digestive disorders and flatulence and Many “Vaat” disorders such as Arthritis etc.

Also, because of the rain water falling on the heated land and there after constant rains, water becomes acidic. (आम्ल विपाकी)

There are Three major divisions of “Rutucharya” :

  1. Aahar (Diet),
  2. Vihar (Habits) &
  3.  “Aushadh” (Medicine).

Aahar ( Diet )

Considering the aggravation of “Dosh” in body and impaired digestion in the rainy season, the diet has to be very careful.

Apathya( Diet restrictions ) :

Any food that will increase 'Pitta' and 'Vaat' should be avoided. The rough list though is giving below.

1. Sattu mixed with water.

2. Eat leafy vegetables carefully. They should not be mandatory.

3. River water.

4. Even if you crave all the spicy and oily food in this season, all such foods hamper 'Pitta', so their consumption should be avoided.

5. Dried meat. Dried meat is considered abstain in Ayurved as it causes aggravation of all the three “Dosh” in body.

6. On a day when the clouds are overcast and the Sun is not shining, it is best not to eat a full meal. If feels to eat, eat light (Laghu) and Warm (Ushna) fresh food.

7. Fruits should not be the mandatory part of the diet. If feels to eat, Fruits should be Seasonal, regional and naturally riped.

Pathya ( Recommendations ) :

1. Honey :

"पान भोजन संस्कारान् प्रायः क्षौद्रान्वितान् भजेत् |"

~ The right amount of honey must be used with all food and drink. But it should be in small quantities. Excessive intake of honey causes severe indigestion. Such a small amount of honey helps in proper digestion of the excessive wet portion in the food produced in the process of digestion..specially produced in the rainy season. (Chakrapani commentry)

2. "व्यक्ताम्ल लवण स्नेहं वातवर्षाकुले अहानि |"

~ One should include a food which is sweet, sour and little salty in taste. But be careful of it not being acidity such as : Pickles, papad etc.

3. Old grains should be consumed like... "Yav" (Barley), Wheat, "Shashti Shali Rice". New grains should be avoided.

4. Boiled water

5. Well water

6. Old grains can be consumed along with vegetable mung soup (green pulse) or meat soup.

7. Sonth (dry ginger powder) should be the part of every meal.

Vihar ( Habits ) :

1. Day time sleep should not be taken.

2. Do not roam around dewy areas.

3. Vyayam (Exercise) : Do not perform (in excess quantity). Considering the previous strength loss in Aadan kaal.

4. Avoid consuming Sunlight.

5. Coitus should be avoided.

6. Apply herbal scrubs to the body.

7. Take a bath with herbal aromatic powders.

8. Wear light, soft, clean and dry clothing.

9. The living place should be clean and dry.

10. Herbal incense and fumes should be used at home and work place.

11. Avoid getting wet in the rain. If wet, immediately wipe the hair dry and take a bath with hot water.

The third part of Rutucharya is Aushadh ( Medicine ) :

Prakruti", Nature of the diseases and health issues vary person to person. There are Vast and detailed description of such subtle concepts in Ayurved. So it is always insisted that no medicine should be taken without the advice of an expert Vaidya.
